Being a Pc technician for 15 years,i have seen cheap bad pcs and some cheap good pcs, well this is a good one for the price,it performs really well for day to day use,web browsing, emails, documents, etc etc.
Compared to my lenovo ultrabook well its no rival but keep in mind the price and the hardware limitations and you can understand why ,people are giving 1 star, you cant compare the performance ofa high end pc with an entry level pc there will be a big difference by default.
The good stuff
Battery duration is good keyboard feedback is good its light and just 3mm thicker than my ultrabook Simple design touchpad works great, but is not a polished pad ,those pads works better Integraded BT and type N wifi works great Silent operation
The not so good stuff
plastic atracts your body oils so it will be some spots in darker color (i recommend a non silicone plastic safe dressing or just a simple microfibertowel with a dab of baby oil and rub it on all surfaces, that will take care of darker spots) loaded with some crappy softwares ( constant freeze cause is the dell update software, dell digital distribution and face recognition software, get rid of them they are memory drainers) lack of status lights
So if you dont like the simple performance of this laptop you can do 2 simple upgrades and have a much better pc. 1. upgrade to a 4gb memory 2. upgrade to a ssd drive
My final tought If you want a high end for $200 well look elsewhere this not the one If you want an every day simple PC with good performance this is it,if you want to make it a better pc then just do those 2 simple upgrades if you can find those parts cheap and you can do it yourself.
if you cant do the upgrades by yourself and cant find the parts are a low price dont invest money then, look elsewhere and get another pc with the specs you want.

I really wish I didn't get this computer. I have very minimal needs when it comes to a computer so I thought I would go with the cheapest one I could find. I made sure to clear off all the stuff that I didn't need and I even have my roommate who is a networking wiz look it over to make sure it was running as good as possible. After all that it still barely runs a web browser. There have been times when I'll try to stream Netflix and it stops every 10 seconds. I'll open the task manager and it shows the CPU constantly maxing out and sometimes the Disk as well. There was a time when this computer would be state of the art but the demands on a computer in today's world are too great for this computer. I am writing this review on this computer so it does work but it far too frustrating for the cost savings. I would suggest spending a little more money and get a computer that can save your hairline.
For the price this is a good laptop, with a few upgrades it’s a great one which I will detail in this long winded review. I bought this laptop for my niece who is getting ready to head off to college. A little background on me is I was a computer technician for 6 years (during high school and college), and am now 5 years as an IT professional for a large company. I wanted to get a budget laptop that would last her through 4 years and possibly longer if she decides to pursue her educational career further. Truth is that unless your recipient is going to be doing heavy media editing not much is needed for your average student. I was researching all the low cost models (HP Stream, Asus, and Acer), but this one beats them all out for one easy fact, it’s upgradable with the same processor as all those laptops which is huge.
Out of the box this is a great computer for a college kid or an average home user who will do nothing but write papers or browse the internet. Here is a quick list of the pros and cons out of the box.
Pros - Boots fast which a CPU that will handle all day to day tasks - Screen is very crisp and much better than I was expecting - Keyboard is very tactile and easy to type on (I am typing this whole review on this laptop) - Very lightweight and portable, with a battery that lasts a long time.
Middle road - 2GB should last for average users but I definitely recommend an upgrade - Speakers are decent at best, they will do but headphones will be much more enjoyable
Cons - Touchpad is pretty low quality had I have concerns about its longevity, I definitely recommend a mouse. Here are my details on how to make this a great computer and everything you will need in order to do this for as cheap as you can on Amazon. 3 things will be required to perform these upgrades and below are links to the cheapest I have found.
At the time of writing this review you can get all 3 for $85 dollars (USB drive is required for creating a backup of you operating system image which is around 7.1GBs). Now here are the instructions for upgrading your new laptop.
- First boot the system into the windows operating system - Open Dell Backup and Recovery and create bootable recovery drive on the USB drive I recommended getting. - Once completed shut down the computer and unplug it. - Turn the computer over and remove the two screws and the bottom panel to reveal the memory and the HDD. - Replace the memory and hard drive with the solid state drive (You can find youtube videos if you are nervous) - Once everything is put back together boot the machine back up with the USB drive connected and recover the operating system. (Keep USB drive in a safe place) - When completed remove the USB drive and boot back into windows.
You now have a less than $300 laptop that will perform better than anything else you could get at near this price. But we aren’t done yet we have some extra parts to utilize. The ram unfortunately we cannot use but that 500GB HDD we can let’s put it in an enclosure and now we have large backup drive and additional storage. I recommend this one.
The last thing we can do to get this computer running as fast as possible are software tweaks. Go ahead and uninstall any Dell software on the machine except their backup and recovery. Also remove the amazon software as well (hit change in add or remove programs which will allow you to remove it). Then go ahead and install Firefox (my preference as it is more resource friendly) or chrome with the ublock add-on. That’s it just go ahead and get yourself some nice headphones or external speakers and a portable mouse and there are no more negatives about this machine. Enjoy a great laptop that is perfect for the everyday user or student for under $300 dollars.

I am very happy with this laptop. If you are considering this computer, first read the review by Johnny Gonzalez. He is totally correct (except on one point) and he is steering you in the right direction. The strength of this unit is that it is well-made and upgradable. I upgraded the ram to 8 GB (Mr. Gonzalez says the maximum is 4, but 8 works just fine) and I put in a 240GB SSD drive. I then installed Linux Mint Cinnamon edition. The result is a snappy, simple, quiet, easy to use laptop, just what I wanted, and for a very reasonable price! Linux Mint works great on this laptop. There were no additional drivers to load, everything just worked-- wifi, touchpad, volume buttons, the works. The fan (which is very quiet) hardly every turns on, and the battery seems to last forever. So the bottom line is this: with a certain amount of work up-front (installing new ram and hard drive, and changing the operating system), the result is a fine laptop. No it is not a Macbook Pro. But for a fraction of the price, what's not to like?

Got the 3543 non-touch with windows 8.1 i3,4GB, 500GBHHD
Before turning on I replaced the hard drive with a 512GB Transcend SSD and upgraded the memory to 8GB
Removed secure boot and disabled PXE in BIOS
UPDATE! The Card reader, MEI, and Wifi Driver on Dell support site was not the Windows7 version even though it stated it was. I was able to get the Windows7 versions of these drivers from the previous model support site (Inspiron 3542).
Pros Cheap i3 5th Gen Quiet Fan
Cons: Touchpad: Cannot select multiple items with the mouse it is annoying going to try to fix this. I do not have the right click issue like other reviews said. UPDATE!: Was able to fix this by uninstalling the dell touchpad drivers and using the previous Inspiron 3542 touchpad driver.
Wifi Signal seems to be lower than my other laptops. If it doesn't improve I'm going to swap this out the 1704 dell wifi with a intel dual band centrino card. UPDATE! I ended up installing the Centrino WiFi card, performance seems a bit better. Available through amazon, just search Intel 6300.
Single Channel Memory (only 1 slot for memory) This can slow down performance.
SD Card slot only allows the card to stick halfway in.. So when a SD card is inserted it sticks out about a half inch out of the side of the laptop. Might not be a con for some people.
Summary: I bought this for someone that just needed web browsing. Hopefully it lasts. The last Dell they had lasted for almost 10 years.
Very Good product at this price point. I bought this for my father who is a light user. The i3 runs all the basic tasks- Heavy Browsing, Light stock market applications etc. pretty well Considering it doesnt come with a SSD, Boot time is still pretty short and the current battery life is good at ~7-8 hrs.
Out of the box the product had a minor issue, which I was able to fix. This isn't expected in an out of box product as it ruins the overall user-experience. [One of the reason why people pay for costlier apple products]. I would just say poor quality control. Average user would just return the product or just live with it.
Issue: The laptop was packed well and on removing from the sleeve looked good. However on turning it ON, I saw bright spot towards the right side of the screen. All the pixels in the area were working working fine - Some people might have just lived with it. Having an OCD, I just contacted amazon for replacement. However the replacement wasn't reaching me in time and I needed to drop this off to my dad when I was visiting him. I googled about pressure marks and planned to try and fix it myself. I cancelled the return and amazon provided me compensation to get this fixed. [+1 to Amazon for this]
I opened up the display, and unscrewed the LCD from the top cover. What I saw was a - "small lose screw sitting behind the lcd screen". This was pressing against the back of the LCD screen causing the bright spot on the display. I believe a case of a lost screw while assembling the laptop - and there, I found it! Once removed, the bright spot was gone.
This is my first laptop since getting a Dell Studio 1500 series back in 2009, which due to the design flaws and my poor handling, crapped out on me way too soon. This computer is a 64bit Windows 8.1 operating system with 500 available GB as the description states. The look of the computer is nice but nothing luxurious, it is lightweight in my opinion and may feel cheap depending on what you are used to handling, no it does not feel like a Mac but it doesn't feel like it will fall apart at any given moment either.
As for the performance of the operating system itself, it is decent and gets the job done. As military personnel I have had some issues with IE and accessing AKO sites because IE freezes up and shuts down, which has been the most frustrating issue in and of itself, however, once I got Firefox it all ran smoothly. I plan on uninstalling some of the bloatware dell offers on their computers, but even before doing so this computer runs just fine and gets the job done. I would recommend it for someone who wants to access the internet, check email, write documents and just perform the typical computer tasks with. I have had my moments of where the computer may seem to freeze up when in all actuality it is just taking longer than I would prefer it to in order to accomplish whatever task I have told it to do, but it is nothing that is such a problem I could not live with it or that I would return this at all.
Design: Very angular, all-black, minimalist design with no frills or embellishments.Top cover is textured to prevent finger marks. Weight: Seems quite light, much lighter than my previous Dell. Noise: Disk drive is whisper-quiet.You have to put your ear very close to hear it. Screen: Brightness is just OK in normal light. Sound: Volume is just OK. Keyboard: OK Performance:I have the Core i3 and 4 GB RAM.This is just about OK for most normal uses (Word, Excel, YouTube, etc.)If you want lightening response, go with the Core i5 and more RAM. LEDs:Has only one, which will show white if the laptop is plugged in AND charging; will show red if the battery is low, plugged in or not.Downside to this is that, if the laptop is closed AND not plugged in, you don't know if it is sleeping or off. This takes some getting used to.Can't think why Dell would want to save a dollar or two by eliminating the usual LEDs. Price: Got it purchased and delivered for $402.Not bad.
Would I buy it again?Hard to tell, since I haven't done a hands-on test with half a dozen competitors in order to make a comparison.Overall, for the price I am satisfied; and Dell has always been reliable for me.
UPDATE: Found a way to improve the sound: Go to "Dell Audio" and adjust the equalizer.I boosted the higher-frequency sounds, and the overall sound seems twice as good.Pity this control is somewhat hidden.
